Can a PCS 7 V8.0 SP1 OS Station Replace a Combined ES–OS Computer
An OS-station computer cannot be declared a replacement for a combined ES–OS station solely from its PCS 7 bundle label or by copying another station's image. Confirm hardware suitability, the intended approved software role, engineering data and licenses separately. PCS 7 V8.0 SP1 documents combined ES/OS configurations within a defined scope, but the available backup and two product codes do not establish a complete replacement or recovery procedure.

Separate Hardware, Software Role and Backup
The installation uses PCS 7 V8.0 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2. One computer is described as an ES–OS station with product code 6ES7 660-3GD21-2CB0; another is an OS station with code 6ES7 660-3HC21-2DA0. A backup is reported only for the second computer.
Those identifiers alone do not establish interchangeable hardware, installed engineering software or licensed roles. Also distinguish a disk image from a project archive and an OS runtime download: they contain different recovery information.
Documented Combined-Station Scope
The V8.0 SP1 PC Configuration and Authorization manual describes a combined ES and OS for small systems, with the OS configured as a single-station system. Appendix B separately defines approved combinations and simultaneous-use restrictions.
A computer informally called Server 1 is not thereby proven to match that combined single-station arrangement. Establish whether it is an OS server, an OS single station or another approved combination before deciding on replacement.
Prepare the Replacement Assessment
Use this engineering assessment before restoring an image:
- Inventory the failed or original station's actual roles, installed versions, licenses and project data.
- Identify exactly what the available backup contains and which station produced it.
- Compare the proposed target's hardware and driver requirements with those of the image and installed release.
- Select a supported role and installation plan using the V8.0 SP1 approved-configuration tables.
- Establish how engineering projects, libraries and the intended station identity will be recovered.
- Prepare a separate rollback and network reconnection plan before any target is brought onto the plant network.
This assessment does not authorize overwriting either existing station. A Server 2 image is not demonstrated to contain Server 1's engineering environment.
Apply the Documented Image-Backup Precautions
Section 4.3.14 recommends imaging the operating-system and PCS 7 partitions after restart and installation testing. It explicitly excludes license keys from the image and directs their approved transfer before image creation. It also requires image software suitable for the operating system and use of that software manufacturer's instructions.
That is a backup procedure, not a guarantee that an image can be restored onto different hardware. Resolve the actual target's compatibility and license handling before selecting a restore sequence.
Verification
Verify the recovered software roles and exact versions in an isolated acceptance environment. Confirm that the required engineering project and libraries exist and that the station configuration matches its intended role.
For an OS role, verify intended process communication and operator functions under an approved test plan. For an ES role, verify the necessary engineering operations in a project copy. A successful Windows boot does not prove either role is complete.
Limitations and Operational Precautions
No verified hardware equivalence, complete backup contents or successful restore is available. The question therefore cannot be closed with an unconditional image-copy instruction.
Preserve the functioning station and available backups. Do not connect a restored computer with an unreviewed identity or communication configuration to production. Use approved license-management procedures; a cloned image is not a license-transfer method.
Engineer FAQ
Does the OS-station bundle label prevent every engineering use?
The label alone does not settle the installed role, hardware suitability or licenses.
Does an image from Server 2 restore Server 1's engineering data?
That has not been established; inspect the backup contents.
Is a combined ES/OS configuration documented?
Yes, within the manual's stated single-station and approved-combination scope.
