How to Assign a Channel Signal in the PCS 7 Technological Editor
In PCS 7 V9.0 SP3, the Technological Editor gained an Assignment field for a control module's Signal attribute. It lets you associate a channel-block input with a technological signal when the channel block is not directly connected to the technological block. This assignment is especially relevant to indirect signal paths; it does not, by itself, prove or diagnose an unspecified insertion defect.

When the Assignment Field Applies
Siemens documents this field as a V9.0 SP3 addition. It identifies a signal-processing (channel) block when there is no direct connection between that block and the technological block. The CFC V9.0 SP6 Function Manual describes this arrangement as Variant 4: a channel block feeds an intermediate block, which feeds the technological block. The SP6 manual is a later manual describing the SP3 feature; check the installed CFC version and its matching Readme before applying the instructions.
Configure an Indirect Signal Path
Use this procedure when a channel block connects through intermediate logic rather than directly to the technological block:
- In the CFC chart, connect the channel-block output to the intermediate block input, and connect the intermediate block output to the technological block input. The manual's example uses
FbkOpen.PV_Out→Negation.In→Negation.Out→Monitoring_DI.In. - Open the control module in the Technological Editor and locate the corresponding signal (control variable, or CV).
- Assign the technological block input to that CV's
Assigned I/Oattribute by dragging the input from the CFC Editor into the attribute'sAssignmentfield. - Set the CV's
Signalattribute value to the intended hardware signal by selecting the value field, right-clicking, and choosing the hardware signal. - In the
Assignmentfield of thatSignalattribute, drag the input of the channel block from the CFC Editor. In Siemens' example, that isFbkOpen.PV_In.
The three assignments have distinct roles: Assigned I/O identifies the technological block input, the Signal attribute value identifies the hardware signal, and the Signal assignment identifies the channel block input used for signal processing.
Expected Result and Scope
For the documented Variant 4, the signal assignment identifies the channel block even though an intermediate block separates it from the technological block. The hardware signal is associated with the technological input through the configured CV. The ticket does not describe the actual symptom, the affected CMT/EPHT/EMT definition, or an expected-versus-actual result. Therefore the documented configuration explains where the setting is and how Siemens defines its use, but cannot establish that it fixes the reported “insertion signal” issue.
Version Applicability and Related Behavior
Siemens' CFC V9.0 SP3 Upd1 Readme explicitly identifies the Assignment field and its purpose. The CFC V9.0 SP6 manual provides the detailed Variant 4 procedure. Do not infer that earlier V9.0 SP1/SP2 installations expose the SP3 field. Also note the SP3 Upd1 Readme's separate caution: when signal assignment is used, Synchronize plant types... replaces an existing CFC interconnection at the assigned input with a textual interconnection; that textual interconnection can be closed using Close textual interconnections. This behavior is not a general insertion-error fix.
Verification
Inspect the technological CV and confirm that (a) Assigned I/O targets the intended technological-block input, (b) the Signal value is the intended hardware tag, and (c) the Signal assignment identifies the correct channel-block input. Then inspect the CFC chart wiring through any intermediate blocks and review relevant compile logs using the project's normal engineering process. These checks confirm configuration consistency; they do not prove that a separate insertion defect is resolved. No procedure was reported as lab-tested.
Limitations and Operational Precautions
The source names PCS 7 V9.0 SP3 but does not preserve the referenced attachment or explain what “bug in the insertion signal” means. It is therefore not possible to determine whether the complaint concerns chart wiring, signal assignment, a software defect, or another editor action. No manufacturer source reviewed establishes that this field universally fixes an insertion bug. Confirm exact CFC/PCS 7 version, signal type and path, and the observed editor or compile behavior before changing a live project. Follow project backup and change-control requirements for engineering changes.
Engineer FAQ
Where is the setting? In the Technological Editor, on a control module signal's Signal attribute, in its Assignment field.
Which PCS 7 version introduced it? Siemens identifies the field as new in CFC V9.0 SP3.
What does the assignment point to? For the documented indirect path, it points to the input of the signal-processing/channel block.
Is this assignment the hardware tag itself? No. The Signal attribute value specifies the hardware signal; the Assignment field specifies the channel-block input.
Does the setting guarantee a fix for any signal-insertion bug? No. The ticket omits the symptom details needed to connect its reported issue to this documented configuration.
