How to Find Archived PCS 7 V8.2 Alarms by Time Period
In PCS 7 V8.2, use the History list to search archived alarm events, then apply a Date/Time criterion with From and To values for the period of interest. A message list can display up to 1,000 messages per OS server; Siemens documents reducing the result set with filters, not increasing this display limit. Current incoming alarms and archived history are different lists.

Choose the Correct Message List
The incoming alarm list shows current messages. The History list contains incoming, acknowledged and outgoing messages and accesses the message archive. For an alarm no longer current, search History. Siemens documents a maximum of 1,000 messages per OS server in a message list and recommends suitable filters; the V8.2 operator manual does not describe increasing this limit.
Filter the History List by Date and Time
- Open the History list from the message-system button set.
- Click Open selection dialog.
- In Criterion, double-click a blank field and select Date/Time.
- Double-click its Setting field to open Setting - Date/Time.
- Enable From and enter the start date and time.
- Enable To and enter the end date and time.
- Click OK.
- Click Update to refresh the History list; PCS 7 V8.2 requires manual updates for this list.
Use a bounded interval appropriate to the investigation and the project's time basis.
Add Other Criteria When Needed
Use Set user-defined filters in the message-list toolbar to reduce a large result set. The V8.2 manual lists Higher process control permission. Create a named selection, add criteria by choosing a message block and address, enter a suitable text or value, then select and apply the filter. Criteria within one filter are AND-linked; multiple enabled filters are OR-linked. Available fields depend on project configuration.
Expected Results and Display Limit
The History list should show matching archived events within the selected interval, subject to archive availability and source selection. If too many entries remain, narrow the range or add criteria. The manual documents up to 1,000 messages per OS server in a message list; it does not document raising this cap.
Verification
Confirm History—not the incoming list—is open, both time bounds are correct, and the list has been manually updated. Check representative event timestamps and message attributes. If results are missing, widen the interval and confirm archive availability and selected OS server before concluding that the event was not recorded.
Limitations and Operational Precautions
This procedure selects messages available through the configured archive path; it does not restore deleted, expired or unavailable data. When Process Historian or a Central Archive Server is used, archive availability and selected source affect the period accessible. The operator procedure does not change archive retention.
Engineer FAQ
Does the incoming alarm list contain older alarms? Use History for archived events.
Can the V8.2 list show more than 1,000 messages per OS server? The manual documents 1,000 and recommends filters; it does not document a higher limit.
Why press Update? PCS 7 V8.2 requires manual updates for History.
How are filter criteria combined? Criteria within a filter use AND; multiple enabled filters use OR.
Does a Date/Time criterion prove archive coverage? No. It selects within available data; archive coverage must also be confirmed.
