Read Targeted PROFINET Device Status with SFC 51 in PCS 7

Use a supported, targeted SFC 51 RDSYSST status query when you need the state of selected PROFINET module/submodule objects. Siemens documents partial-list W#16#0C96 with a logical-address index, completion/error handling and separate availability and maintenance bits. A custom cyclic CFC diagnostic block remains project-specific: checking maintenance bits alone does not prove device availability, and a polling result does not establish the validity or response time needed for a protective motion inhibit.

Choose the Diagnostic Object You Actually Need

If the requirement is the state of two particular PROFINET devices, identify their relevant configured module/submodule diagnostic objects instead of assuming a full network scan is required.

Siemens documents SFC 51 RDSYSST with partial-list W#16#0C96 for a module/submodule located centrally or on a PROFIBUS DP/PROFINET interface. INDEX identifies its logical start address with an I/O-direction bit. This supports a targeted query, but the correct address depends on the device's configured representation; do not substitute its IP address, PROFINET device number or a guessed interface address. Confirm CPU support for the requested list. System functions manual, sections 13.3 and 34.27

Understand Completion Before Evaluating Data

The documented SFC interface includes REQ, SSL_ID, INDEX, RET_VAL, BUSY, SSL_HEADER and DR. Some language environments use localized parameter labels; do not mix them in unverified code.

  1. Request the intended list using its supported ID and target index.
  2. Observe BUSY. A true value means the read has not completed.
  3. Check RET_VAL before treating the result as valid.
  4. Inspect SSL_HEADER.LENTHDR and N_DR and evaluate only the complete records actually returned in DR.
  5. Reject a malformed, failed or incomplete result as a fresh proof of device health.

The manual documents LENTHDR as record length and N_DR as transferred-record count. A returned header is not interchangeable with a successful current status record.

Interpret Availability Separately from Maintenance

For the historical xy96 record, Siemens documents the following Eastat bits:

BitDocumented meaning0Module disrupted, detected through diagnostic interrupt1Module exists2Module not available3Module disabled4Station problem, for the representative slot only8Maintenance required9Maintenance demand

A routine that checks only maintenance bits 8 and 9 does not implement a complete availability check. Nor is module presence alone proof that a sensor's measured quantity is valid. Choose the relevant status fields for the actual device and inspect its input-data quality as a separate requirement. Manual, section 34.27, pp. 753–755

Build a Bounded Diagnostic Function

A custom CFC-capable diagnostic block is an engineering adaptation requiring the target CPU, library and device configuration. The following design principles do not constitute a manufacturer-supplied ready-to-download block:

  • Retain each request's state and result validity across cyclic calls instead of repeatedly waiting inside one program cycle.
  • Query the intended objects at a reviewed rate and track the age of the last successful result.
  • Distinguish unavailable, disabled, diagnostic-fault, maintenance and read-error states rather than collapsing every condition into one healthy bit.
  • Initialize unknown status deliberately and prevent a failed read from refreshing old data as if it were current.
  • Where response-time requirements demand event handling, use the applicable CPU/PCS 7 diagnostic design rather than assuming polling alone is sufficient.

Do not directly edit generated driver charts to create an undocumented dependency. Preserve their intended generation workflow and review any required integration point against the installed PCS 7 driver documentation.

Verification

In an isolated test, confirm that each logical address returns the intended configured object. Exercise device absence, restoration, disabled state and relevant diagnostic conditions, recording the returned status, read result and data age.

Measure the complete detection-to-action interval under the intended CPU load. No general guarantee is established for a network with fewer than 100 devices or a particular cycle time. Test invalid sensor quality independently: a reachable device can still provide an unusable process value.

Limitations and Operational Precautions

The target CPU/firmware, PCS 7 version, device model and required reaction time were not specified. The historical manual verifies SFC/list behavior but does not establish a complete PCS 7 driver, a validated redundant-path strategy or a safety-rated motion inhibit for this installation.

Do not use an unvalidated polling result as the sole protective function where loss of the measurement can create a hazardous movement. Determine the required protection and response time through the applicable plant safety design. Preserve the project and review CPU loading and rollback before deploying custom diagnostics.

Engineer FAQ

Can I query a selected module instead of every device?
The documented 0C96 list is addressed to a specific logical module/submodule, subject to CPU support and correct index selection.

Do maintenance bits prove whether the device is reachable?
No. Availability, maintenance state and measurement validity are distinct checks.
